The city of Wiang Kungam was built by King Mengrai a few years before he built Chiang Mai, on the opposite side of the river in the modern village of Sarapi. Wat Chedi Chet Yod in Chiang Mai was built by King Tilokaraja to bouse the world buddhist council held to celebrate the 2000th anniversary of Buddha's death. The unusual shape of the chedi is inspired by the temple of Bodgaya in India, probably through Mon replicas seen in Burma.
